US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday 11 October, on his Truth Social platform, that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an "energy ceasefire" effective immediately, writing "Do not break it!" He gave no further details.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told the news site Axios that the announcement was news to him, but that Ukraine would agree if Russia did. A senior Ukrainian official told Reuters that Kyiv was ready to accept such a ceasefire if Moscow was. Trump had made a similar announcement in mid-September that neither side confirmed.

Al Jazeera reported that Zelensky later said Russia attacked Ukrainian energy sites despite the announcement. Zelensky also said it was possible to stop strikes on energy infrastructure "as early as today", but that Russian President Vladimir Putin did not want to.

The announcement came after a week of rising tension between Washington and Kyiv, including a surprise US–Russia diesel deal that Zelensky criticised, and mutual strikes on energy infrastructure that were adding pressure to global energy prices.
